MD to Word Converter — Turn .md Files into DOCX

Got a .md file and need a Word document? Upload it with the button in the editor toolbar, or paste its contents into the editor on the left. The preview on the right shows how it will look, and Download Word Doc gives you a .docx file you can open in Microsoft Word, Google Docs or LibreOffice. Nothing is uploaded to a server: the conversion runs in your browser, so a private README or draft never leaves your computer.

Quick start: click the upload icon, pick your .md file, check the preview, then download the Word document.

How to Convert an MD File to Word

  1. Open your file. Use the upload button, or open the .md file in any text editor, copy everything and paste it into the left panel.
  2. Check the preview. Headings, lists, tables, code blocks and links show up the way Word will receive them. Fix anything odd in the editor and the preview updates as you type.
  3. Download the .docx. The file is built on your device and saved straight to your downloads folder.

Prefer pasting formatted text into an existing Word document instead? The general Markdown to Word converter covers pasting, copying and the AI-output workflow in more detail.

What Is a .md File?

A .md file is a plain text file written in Markdown, a lightweight way to mark up headings, lists and links with ordinary characters: # for headings, * for emphasis, | for table columns. Developers use it for README files and documentation, and many note-taking and writing apps save in it too.

Word does not understand that markup. If you rename a .md file to .docx it will not open, and if you open it as text you see the raw # and ** symbols instead of formatted headings and bold text. Converting the file is what turns those symbols into real Word styles.

Open and Convert .md Files on Windows, Mac and Linux

This converter runs in the browser, so the steps are the same on every system:

  • Windows: download or locate the file in File Explorer, then use the upload button here. No Pandoc install or command prompt needed.
  • Mac: the same steps work in Safari, Chrome or Firefox. If a .md file opens in Xcode or TextEdit, copy its contents and paste them into the editor.
  • Linux: any modern browser works, and there is nothing to install from a package manager.
  • Phone or tablet: you can paste text into the editor on mobile browsers, though uploading a file works best on a desktop.

Convert a GitHub README.md to Word

A project README is often the document someone outside the team asks for as a Word file. Open the README on GitHub, choose the raw view, copy the text and paste it into the editor here. Badges and images that link to web addresses can appear in the preview, while text, lists, code blocks and tables are converted into their Word equivalents.

Notes from Obsidian, VS Code and Other Editors

Notes you wrote in Obsidian, VS Code or a similar editor are plain .md files, so they work the same way: upload the file or paste the text. If you only need a quick Word copy, this saves installing an extension or a command-line tool.

Example: What Converts

Here is a small sample so you can see what the converter handles. Replace it with your own file when you are ready.

FeatureIn your .md fileIn the Word file
Headings# Title, ## SectionWord heading styles
Emphasis**bold**, *italic*Bold and italic text
Lists- item, 1. stepBulleted and numbered lists
Tablespipe-separated rowsWord tables with a header row

def greet(name):
return f"Hello, {name}!"

Inline math such as E=mc2E = mc^2 is shown in the preview and carried into the document as well.

Alternatives to Converting in the Browser

Pandoc is the standard command-line tool for this job and works well if you already have it installed and are comfortable running pandoc input.md -o output.docx. A browser converter is the faster option when you are on a shared or locked-down computer, when you only need one file, or when you would rather see the result before downloading. The how-to guide compares all the methods side by side. If your text came from an AI chat window instead of a file, paste ChatGPT or Gemini output here and download the same Word document.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I convert an MD file to Word? Upload the file with the toolbar button or paste its contents into the editor, check the preview, and click Download Word Doc. The result is a standard .docx file.

Can Microsoft Word open a .md file directly? Word can open the file as plain text, but it will show the raw markup symbols rather than formatted headings, lists and tables. Converting it first gives you a properly styled document.

Is it free, and do I need an account? It is free and needs no signup. There is no file limit on the number of conversions.

Is my file uploaded anywhere? No. The file is read and converted in your browser, and it is not sent to a server.

Will tables and code blocks survive the conversion? Yes. Markdown tables become Word tables, and fenced code blocks become monospaced blocks. Check the preview first, since the converter follows what you see there.

What about .markdown or .txt files? Both are plain text, so you can upload them or paste their contents the same way.
